Labrador Housing (NLHousing) is committed to addressing the
housing needs of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador who
are most in need and to work in partnership with community
groups that can contribute to an enhanced quality of life for
clients.
Provincial
Home Repair Program (PHRP)*
Through NL
Housing, PHRP is designed to provide funding to:
- assist
low-income homeowners who require repairs to their homes;
- bring
dwellings up to minimum fire and life safety standards,
with improvements in basic heating, electrical and
plumbing services;
- provide
seniors and the physically challenged who require
accessibility changes to their residences the ability to
carry out these renovations, which will allow them to
remain in their homes for a longer period.

Rental Housing
Program* for Low-Income Households
The Rental
Housing Program helps low-income households that cannot obtain
suitable and affordable rental housing on the private market.
You may be able to access low-income rental housing if:
- your total
household income falls within certain income levels;
- your present
housing is adequate; however, you pay more than 30 per
cent of your total household income towards rent and heat;
- your present
housing is unsuitable, you pay less than 30 per cent of
your total household income for rent; however, suitable
housing in your area would cost 30 per cent or more of
your total household income.

rent is based on net income, and tenants are only required
to pay 25% of their total monthly income;

Low
Income Seniors' Benefit
|
|
|
|
The Newfoundland and
Labrador Seniors' Benefit is a refundable tax credit for low
income seniors. A refundable tax credit is an amount paid to an
individual, even if they have no tax payable. The Low Income
Seniors' Benefit is indexed on an annual basis utilizing the
Consumer Price Index. Beginning with the October 2010 payment,
whether single or as a couple, seniors with net income of up to
$26,165 are eligible to receive a maximum benefit of $900. The
amount of the benefit will be phased out as net income increases
between $26,165 and $33,884.
In order to
qualify for this benefit, the person must be 65 years of age by
December 31st of the taxation year. This benefit is paid in
October of each year and is included in the same cheque as the
GST/HST credit. The amount of the credit is based on family net
income from the previous year.
No application is
required. However, individuals must ensure that their annual
income tax return is filed.
